Staying Present During Trauma Therapy: Grounding Techniques

Working through trauma can be scary, painful, and potentially overwhelming. Very often people who have experienced trauma have coped at least in part through some degree of dissociation. While this was necessary for your survival then, continued dissociation (especially forms that are not within your control) is not adaptive once the abuse has stopped. Now the task of therapy is to help you stay present long enough to learn other means of establishing safety in the present. How does someone with automatic survival skills of dissociation learn to do this? Grounding is one skill that can help.

Trauma therapy does not only consist of telling your story or focusing on traumatic memories, though of course that is a crucial part of the work. Bringing trauma memories to mind, talking about them in a trusting relationship, and developing the capacities for managing them while staying present in the moment are all…

Very important information for survivors in the process of healing.

Dr. Kathleen Young: Treating Trauma in Tucson

This post was inspired by a Twitter conversation I had with the illustrious cartoonist of all things therapy related,  @TherapyTales , about this Tweet:

There us a difference between “telling” the story of trauma and “processing” through the trauma. One brings more pain-the other relief. –@zebraspolkadots

When @TherapyTales offered to draw an accompanying ‘toon if I wrote a post on the subject, how could I refuse?  The Tweet resonated with me as I do see this difference in my work with trauma survivors. What is the difference? What do trauma therapists mean when we talk about “processing” trauma? How is this different from talking about it?

Some trauma survivors come into therapy unable to share their stories. Others may recount their traumatic experiences freely, but in a manner that appears disconnected. It seems as if they are talking about someone else (and in the case of dissociative identity disorder, they…

Working with a person that is SRA-DID is not the same as working with a person with dissociate identity disorder. The person that is SRA-DID has been conditioned from birth for a specific position and purpose. They are the culmination of Science with the use of technology, Alchemy, (drugs and psychotropics), Magick and hypnotism in order to create a designed intellect. Their minds are intentionally split, creating multiple identities in the base of the unconscious. Each of these identities will have their own personal belief’s and systems of values. Sadly most SRA-DID survivors are in counseling for decades, with no success because their counselors do not understand the complexity of their design. Rarely does a counselor get to the bottom five layers of the mind, where the templates containing the personal identity are located. They never find the true person that is hidden in the basement of the system. If you are a Counselor and would like to learn how to work with survivors, I will train you to successfully work with your clients. If you are a SRA-DID survivor, I will work with you to bring you to complete healing and integration. This is a ministry of the Lord’s. I do not charge for counseling but trust the Lord to provide. I will not turn anyone away that is in need of counseling. I also am open for consultations for any counselors in need of training, advice or that jut need to speak, If you have a counseling center or would like for me to come and speak to a group I offer several training seminars. If you would like to make a donation to the ministry or pay for your session using paypal you can use the link below. The majority of those I help do not have the ability to pay for services. Will you consider giving to this ministry? I pray the Lord richly bless you as you endeavor to do His will, In Christ’s love: Dr. Tom Knotts, Jr. I have several lectures that can be viewed at the following location: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKYtVI4IYgplWEysimJF_hQ
Counselors I will work with your clients over speaker phone or video conference through skype or logitec in order to give you training in how to work with SRA-DID survivors and also to bring your client to the healing they deserve.

This set of lectures are on the book “Establishing and Identity Founded in Christ Jesus,” and is on the subject of creating a personal identity that is Scriptural. The importance of discipleship and surrendering to the transforming power of God are emphasized with deconstructing false belief systems and the reconstructing of a Christ centered identity.
